She is best known for combining art-historical, political and pop-cultural references in her works and for her paintings embellished with rhinestones, enamel and rich acrylics that introduce complex notions of femininity and challenge common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representations of women.
The scarf features the artwork A Little Taste Outside of Love (2007), whereby Thomas has recreated Edouard Manet's famous work Olympia (1863), replacing the subject of the white female nude with an African American woman. This work embodies Thomas's continued interest in producing artworks which visualise the black woman's relationship art history and to contemporary culture.
