ELIZABETH PRICE: IN A DREAM YOU SAW A WAY TO SURVIVE AND YOU WERE FULL OF JOY is the accompanying publication of the Hayward Touring exhibition with the same name, and the latest in a series of exhibitions curated by artists.
In this new volume, Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price presents an illustrated narrative that focuses on the horizontal and the reclining figure through four loosely threaded sections: Sleeping, Working, Mourning and Dancing. With her eclectic selection, ranging from historical objects to contemporary works, Price seeks to draw parallels between images from across the centuries through a variety of sculptures, photographs, paintings, videos, etchings, engravings and texts which conjure a sense of connection that transcends time.
This compact and richly illustrated hardcover volume presents an introductory essay by the artist reflecting on her approach to the subject of the horizontal, while literary excerpts resonate with the themes suggested by the artworks in the exhibition. Price's selection includes works by Vito Acconci, Brian Alterio, Guy Bourdin, Becky Beasley, Bertolt Brecht, Claude Cahun, Lygia Clark, John Flaxman, Richard Hamilton, Franz Kafka, Carolee Schneemann, Jo Spence, Gavin Turk, Andy Warhol, Francesca Woodman and many more.
